Leave Inspirational Messages on Sticky Notes in Public Bathrooms/Places

Although this truth might sound petty, whenever it’s midterm or finals week at school and I notice someone has put an inspirational sticky note in a bathroom stall at the library, the note always brightens my day, even if just a little bit. The messages may be corny, but being forced to stare at a “Keep smiling” note or reading one that says, “You are beautiful,” while washing my hands always brings a smile to my face.

With that in mind, and after reading a “kind acts” suggestion page I found through Google, I figured this one would be good to add to my “kind acts and volunteering” bucket list. I bought flowered sticky notes a few weeks ago, but finally set out to start writing and posting inspirational messages a couple days ago.

The lucky (or maybe unlucky, depending if they like random notes in their public bathrooms) stores I went to included Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Model’s, Best Buy, and a general public bathroom at the mall. I placed about 20 sticky notes in total in either the stalls or on bathroom mirrors, with both messages and quotes. In the gallery, you guys can take a look at some of the stuff I wrote.

Although I could be viewed as “the crazy sticky note lady” if anyone caught me in the act (luckily, no one did), pursuing this item on my bucket list really brightened my day. I thought of stressed out moms trying to run errands or someone having a bad day looking at the notes and getting cheered up, even if only temporarily. I even threw in some shameless PR, and on a few sticky notes wrote, “Start a bucket list today :).”

So has anyone done something similar or plan on adding this one to his or her bucket list? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

  1. I like the bucket list note, but in the bathroom? Isn’t that a bit redundant?

I like leaving random notes everywhere, like when I’m returning a book I’ll leave a little nice note in there, or sometimes when leaving a restaurant I’ll write a little note on the receipt for the waiter/waitress because I know how it is working in customer service, or even if I’m in a room with a black board I’ll make sure to leave a happy note for whoever runs into it. It’s just fun. Even though I didn’t run into your sticky notes, even reading it from your gallery makes me feel good too. =D

For my birthday a few years ago, I did acts of kindness all day long. I left notes on public restroom changing tables, each with a small package of diapers that said, “you’re an awesome mom!”

  8. I hope the people seeing your sticky notes in real life were as happy to see them as I was here! 🙂

On my 101-things-to-do-in-1001-days-list I have one about leaving messages in library books. I’ve left one but have more to go before I can cross it off my list.

What an interesting idea. I may do this one of these days!

  13. What a great thing to notice and to pass on – you will never know that these messages may will or may have actually affected someone in a life saving way – sounds dramatic but, it could happen. It could just what they needed at that precise moment. Keep doing it and keep sharing 😀 have a beautiful day

    • Yes, that’s what I was hoping 🙂 I thought it would be really neat if they affected someone that way! Thanks so much for your nice comment and have a beautiful day as well!

      • I sure that its has helped someone like that – are you planning to keep doing it and getting friends to do the same? I hope that you do.. although I imagine it would be annoying constantly taking sticky notes around with you 😀 .. You should put them on items in shops too … hahaaa try to get on TV as the person that won’t stop labeling things ! 😀 x

Hi Christine… I cant wait to spread the hope. What a wonderful and creative idea….. I do plenty of errands, especially with a little boy, public bathrooms are a necessity….. I plan on marking up a few mirrors…. thank you !!!!!

  15. Awesome idea! Definitely something I plan on doing.

I’ve seen these before in bathrooms on rough days. One day at work, someone had taped a fortune cookie message to my register that says “your charming smile is attracting everyone around you =)”, smiley face included. It brightened my dad so much and I keep it in my wallet, always.

    A little kindness and compassion can stretch for miles =}

LOVE THIS! I’m going to start this immediately! I even have sticky notes in my post with my website address that I will use some of the time. Thanks for sharing this Christine! 🙂
I have one in mind already, I think it will be very suiting for women-in the women’s bathroom… “You are beautiful. Believe that, even if you don’t hear it all the time.”

    • Aww so glad to hear that Margo 🙂 And I agree, I think that one would be a great post! I also think it would be really cool to have your website’s address on them! Thanks so much for checking out the post!

When I was in 3rd grade I used to write poems on the toilet paper then carefully roll it back up to leave a little surprise for the next occupant. I love the sticky note idea. I’m totally doing it!

  35. gemsaic says:

I came across a sticky note once on a button we Brits use to stop traffic so we can walk across safely, it said Smile…you’re beautiful! It really made my day. All winter I drew smiley or funny faces on frosted bus shelters. You’re blog reminded me to do more of this. Thank you! ….runs off to buy pretty post notes….

    • Aww that’s so nice to hear! I love seeing notes like that too, which is why I had so much fun doing this 🙂 I love the idea about the smiley faces, so I’m glad you’re thinking of doing it again!

    Added to my bucket list.

  38. This is really cute, I’d be smiling ear to ear, if i’d see something random like this

  39. lynnebford says:

I love your idea and believe I just might try it – someone mentioned using Bible verses, which appeals to me as well. Thank you for the joy that you are spreading! Thanks also for following me as I am a new blogger!

    Very nice!
The best part is when someone finds a note and is inspired to encourage others.
Spreading smiles one note at a time.

This is so cool; how can you not smile seeing something like this? People rock.

  42. Leaving a note like “Today is your day, start a bucket list” might not be nice. Some folks might take it negatively in that they are going to die soon… LOL

  43. agirlwritingstuff says:

You just gave me an idea to do the same thing, except that I would leave these sticky notes randomly inside the pages of library books I borrow. 🙂

  44. Matt Maldre says:

Yaaaay! I’m so happy to see someone else leaving inspirational sticky notes! I leave sticky notes for my gf all the time when she leaves in the morning to teach 8th grade English. I also leave sticky notes in public as part of the “I like notes” project: http://www.flickr.com/groups/i-like-leaving-notes-on-things-i-like

  45. hollyedejer says:

This is PERFECT. I had been thinking about starting a bucketlist and what items I’d put on it, and then you showed up on WordPress! Looking forward to following your blog! And I’m snagging this bucketlist item, by the way. 😀

  46. KraftedKhaos says:

I’ve been thinking for the last several posts of yours (I’m reading them in reverse, so I guess technically it would be the NEXT several posts…) that you need to leave the address for your blog on the things that you do. Not to get glory or anything, because we know that’s not why you’re doing it, but to give the R.A.o.K. recipients an opportunity to not only thank you, but to come on and share if they pay it forward, and if so, what they did… I think it would be awesome to see the chain of events.
