#61
When I first put this item on my bucket list, I never thought I’d be crossing it off in Australia and at first, wondered when I would be crossing it off at all. But as part of the study abroad program I did, in Melbourne, Australia, we were given the option to sign up for surfing lessons at Bells Beach and the experience was incredible.
We were all given matching wetsuits, though they ran out of blue wet suit shirts, which we were told were to identify us in case we drowned; I wound up being one of the unidentified in my black wetsuit. We first started out on the sand, where we practiced critical moves we were told we’d need to surf, such as “the chicken.” Our instructor was a riot and often lifted us of the boards if we were not situated correctly.
As someone who is so clumsy a friend once asked if I was tripping so much on purpose, I didn’t expect to catch any waves. While my expectation proved true, I did manage to stand a few times toward the tail end of a few of the waves. Even so, the experience was the fun part.
We surfed for a few hours, then had lunch, and some of us, me included, went right back out there. When we tired of surfing, we started playing games in the water, put all of our surfboards together, and tried to see who could run across all of the boards without falling. We also had a few “survival of the fittest” rounds with America vs. Australia. Unfortunately, the Australian girl, who was one of the coaches, knocked me down first, despite the motivational cheers of USA, USA from my peers!
While taking surfing lessons in Australia was one of the best experiences of my life, I would recommend taking them anywhere. Despite my lack of coordination, surfing is something I definitely want to try again.
So does anyone surf/has taken surfing lessons before? I’d love to hear about your experiences!
Apologies for the long hiatus, but I have just returned from my trip! Hope everyone is well.
Yayyy! Thanks for sharing! This is also on my bucket list! Can’t wait. Great pictures, too! You’re so fun! 🙂
Haha, aww thanks Margo and back at you 🙂 Let me know when you cross surfing/surfing lessons off the list!
Aww, thanks! Will do! 🙂
I actually never have! Shocking, I know, considering my nationality. I’m glad you had a ball!
Haha, that’s funny, but yes it was a lot of fun and I miss Australia already 🙂
I have only tried surfing once, without a lesson, and did not catch a wave. I actually ended up with bruises on my hips from trying so hard! I look forward to trying again one day…
Aww haha Annette, that sounds like me, but it’s awesome you were determined :)! That’s sort of how I felt, and was disappointed when we had to leave. Hope you get the chance to try surfing again sometime!
I love taking the rescue board out on the beach my boyfriend works at. I suck- I fall… but there is a calm on the ocean that is perfect to just lay out on.
Ah, yes that sounds incredible 🙂 Great way to tan as well! Lol
🙂 iconic beach to have your surfing lessons at. I had mine at Alexandra Heads in Queensland on my honeymoon. Was fun, but it was something to tick off a list so to speak as I haven’t surfed again.
Ah, that’s awesome and I agree 🙂 Haha, understandable though, I’m not sure when I will again either, though I do live in NJ, so maybe I should try!
Hey Christine, welcome aboard! (no pun intended 🙂 ). Glad you are enjoying the Aussie sun & surf. By the time you leave, you will be up there with the big boys…maybe tackling some of those wave’s like the pro’s 🙂 Enjoy your journey! Namaste
Haha, thanks so much Mark! Yes, surfing was a blast and I miss Australia already 🙂
Oops! I thought you were here for a school year, one of those swap country things. Pity you weren’t able to stay longer…soooo much to do and see. And by the sound of it, it was quite warm when you were here anyway 🙂 Good luck for the coming year! Namaste
Oh, I wish, that would’ve been awesome, and yes, great weather! Thanks so much 🙂
Wow surfing looks like so much fun…did you find it hard? I hope your having a great time in Australia! 🙂
It was a lot of fun 🙂 But yes, it was difficult to be honest, at least for me! Although I didn’t think I’d stand at all, so that’s a plus, lol. Thanks so much!
Your welcome! Enjoy life while your there as much as you can!
Thank you :)!
I love surfing, its such a rush! It’s great you gave it a go never stop! 🙂
Thanks! It was so much fun 🙂
Enjoy Victoria (where we pile on the weather for damp shivering yanks) 😀
Hahaha, so true! I loved the weather 🙂 Thanks Mike!
Wow I’d love to take surfing lessons!!! I took my deep sea diving license last year but haven’t crossed surfing off my list yet. Looks like fun.
Yes, definitely try it 🙂 That’s so cool about deep sea diving though! I’ve scuba dived, but still have yet to actually dive!
Great pics – this sounds amazing! Definitely something I need to try when I go to Oz next year – would love to learn to surf!
Yes, definitely try it! You’ll have a blast 🙂
Looks like a blast! What a wonderful experience!
Thank you, it was 🙂
This is so cool! Be safe!
Thanks so much 🙂
Great photos! It looks like so much fun! After seeing the movie, Soul Surfer, back in 2011, my then 12-year old daughter decided she was saving for a surfboard and learning to surf. We live in upstate New York!!? Undeterred, she saved all her money, we found a surf shop and she bought a long board. We’ve been to Florida with her a few times and she’s had the opportunity to surf! When we’re not in Florida, the 7′ board hangs on her bedroom wall. Her entire room was completely redecorated to reflect surfing and Bethany Hamilton’s inspiring story. Thanks for your awesome post! 🙂
Wow, that’s adorable and so cool, I love it 🙂 It’s awesome she’s able to surf when you’re in Florida! So inspiring and thank you for sharing!
Looks like an amazing time! Despite growing up in Southern California, I’ve never really considered surfing, but this post definitely makes me want to try it. 🙂
Thanks Jessica 🙂 And yes, definitely give it a try if you get a chance!
This brings back memories Christine…surfing was also on my bucket list, but I crossed that one off during my trip to Costa Rica in 2011. There are no words to describe that feeling once I finally was able to get up and ride a wave. Incredible feeling of being in the moment. Can’t wait to do it again.
Great experiences!
Congratuations! It’s on my top five things to do this year. Great picture too. Way to go!
Thanks so much! Let me know if you wind up doing it 🙂
Will do. I’m in a Master Swim Class developing new swimming skills to prepare me for the day!
That’s really neat 🙂 What a cool concept!
You look like you had amazing fun. Total respect for getting up there and representing USA too =D
Haha, thanks so much 🙂
Hi there! Well I just started working on a list with my friends and we added surfing! This post made me feel like it was such a good decision! Awesome post by the way -Potter
Aw, I’m so glad to hear that and thanks so much 🙂 Let me know if you decide to do it!
Hehe definitely!
Surfing in Austrailia was a lot harder than Hawaii. The waves broke so close to the shore. Great post and pictures.
Thanks so much! And jealous you’ve been to Hawaii too, lol
Unforunately I live nowhere near a beach (Manchester, England) but I would love to be able to surf! Your pictures look great, it looks like such fun. I need to add this to my ‘bucket list’ too 🙂
Thank you so much! And yes, let me know if you get a chance to do it 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing this post 🙂
Tried surfing in South Africa which was a nice experience because I didn’t even require a wet suit and could still keep warm enough. Surfed in Hawaii which went well except when I was carrying the surfboard, it caught a gust of wind and “kerplunk” I slipped on the slimy path in the ocean and down I went. So, not a “surfing” accident persay… But a walking with a surfboard accident. I’ve surfed here in my home province up in Tofino on the coast of B.C., Canada and both times that was an awesome experience… Although MUCH colder! Surfing is so exhilarating! Love that you had a great experience!
Hahaha the tripping incident sounds like something I would do. But it’s awesome you’ve gotten a chance to try surfing in so many great places 🙂 I completely agree and thanks so much!
Hi 🙂 I gave you an award for blog that interests me and inspires me 🙂
You can check it out here, and accept of course 😀 :http://ivymosquito.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/aaaand-the-winner-is-you/
Thank you so much, that means a lot :)!
I shall be following you closely; you surely have a great zest for life! Is there any particular reason you want to cram as much in as posssible? I fear my eyes are BIGGERt – than MY bucket. I have done a heck of a lo- too much to fit in one bucket.
Thank you so much 🙂 And haha, I know what you mean; I guess I have that problem too! And for me, I just find it a lot of fun trying to pursue new activities and adventures, but know that if I put them in writing, I’ll be more likely to go through with it!
