Leave Inspirational Messages on Sticky Notes in Public Bathrooms/Places

Although this truth might sound petty, whenever it’s midterm or finals week at school and I notice someone has put an inspirational sticky note in a bathroom stall at the library, the note always brightens my day, even if just a little bit. The messages may be corny, but being forced to stare at a “Keep smiling” note or reading one that says, “You are beautiful,” while washing my hands always brings a smile to my face.

With that in mind, and after reading a “kind acts” suggestion page I found through Google, I figured this one would be good to add to my “kind acts and volunteering” bucket list. I bought flowered sticky notes a few weeks ago, but finally set out to start writing and posting inspirational messages a couple days ago.

The lucky (or maybe unlucky, depending if they like random notes in their public bathrooms) stores I went to included Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Model’s, Best Buy, and a general public bathroom at the mall. I placed about 20 sticky notes in total in either the stalls or on bathroom mirrors, with both messages and quotes. In the gallery, you guys can take a look at some of the stuff I wrote.

Although I could be viewed as “the crazy sticky note lady” if anyone caught me in the act (luckily, no one did), pursuing this item on my bucket list really brightened my day. I thought of stressed out moms trying to run errands or someone having a bad day looking at the notes and getting cheered up, even if only temporarily. I even threw in some shameless PR, and on a few sticky notes wrote, “Start a bucket list today :).”

So has anyone done something similar or plan on adding this one to his or her bucket list? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

Sure beats the bumper-stickers I used to see when I lived in the States : “Have a good day and pass it on to Alice”, “Honk if you have a horn” (or something like that), “He who laughs laughs laughs laughs”. Personally I prefer to post my pearls on my blog : blindfaithblindfolly.wordpress.com, which, I am pleased to note, you have decided to do me the honor of following. I am looking forward to your comments. No sticky notes required.

  15. Great idea! Hope the janitors don’t mind or get into trouble. Are people encouraged to take the sticky home with them? Or maybe ask people to do the same and spread the word?

    • I agree! I hope I didn’t get them in trouble too :p And hmm, that’s a great question. I guess they could take the messages with them 🙂 Or asking others to do the same would be awesome!

What a brilliant idea! Perhaps i will create my own. Being voted as the unhappiest country, I’m pretty sure my people could use some of these.

  17. Hi Christine,
Thanks for following my blog and leading me to yours. Great idea, this blog! This sticky note post is an example of why those little smiley face stickers have been popular for so long (or smiley icons). Those momentary shifts out of our troubles help brighten our day and get us through life’s struggles.
Here’s something I do…. I collect postcards, write jokes on them, and then send them SNAIL MAIL to family and friends. I also send comics in the envelope any time I send out a bill or request SNAIL MAIL. I do it snail mail, because NO ONE expects anything good to come from snail mail anymore. So it’s a surprise!
Hope to hear from you again sometime.
    Debbie 🙂

  27. Hi Christine
Thanks for signing up to my blog – http://www.gaylesthoughts.com.
This idea about leaving sticky notes in toilets is absolutely brilliant. Far better than some of the other ‘stuff’ that one sees. I shall be carrying a sticky pad in my handbag from now on and spread some happiness.

I LOVE THIS! I work in a high school and we just had finals week and then we have Regents coming up (mandatory standardized testing in New York) and everyone could use a smile. I am going to implement this ASAP!

  46. I found one in the JCPennys ladies room on the mirror one day which said “You are beautiful.” It made my day. Took a pic of it with my phone and still have that pic. 🙂
Spread the love and the smiles! We all can use more of them. 🙂

  47. Thanks for such a great thought. I do like random acts of kindness and that suspicious smirk and twinkle in their eye that some people get when they realize that I didn’t have to do that or say that kind thing but I did it, and they liked it.

Love it! This would brighten my day. I’m going to try it.
